Welcome to Luna’s Sewing Corner! ✨
Confession time: I recently introduced the Brother 1034DX serger to my sewing space, primarily to have it threaded with white thread, while keeping my Brother 1034D serger dedicated to black.
On unboxing the Brother 1034DX, I initially thought there would be minor differences between the two machines, particularly in terms of stitch control locations. However, to my surprise, there’s so much more to it!
Let me guide you through the similarities and differences between these two famous Brother sergers.
Brother 1034D & 1034DX: What’s Common?
Before diving into the unique features, let’s quickly address the similarities:
- Maximum stitching speed for both is 1,300 stitches/minute, managed by identical foot pedals.
- They share the same stitch patterns, lengths, and widths.
- Neither of them is a coverstitch machine.
- Both come with the same accessories, needles, and presser feet.
- Once you get the hang of it, both are a breeze to use and thread, though their manuals could be more user-friendly.
- While neither is designed for heavy-duty tasks, for those who intend to frequently serge thick materials, the Brother ST4031HD serger is a good recommendation.
Brother 1034D vs. 1034DX: Spotting the Differences
Now, let’s explore what sets them apart:
- Size & Weight: The 1034DX is slightly bigger and heavier, but it’s more convenient to carry due to a front grip.
- Stitch Settings: The 1034DX features easily adjustable knobs on its right, making them more user-friendly than the 1034D’s levers on the left.
- Lighting: While the 1034DX uses a focused LED light, the 1034D uses a wider incandescent bulb.
- Trim Trap: The 1034DX boasts a more spacious and user-friendly trim trap.
- Free Arm Design: The 1034DX’s free arm offers better feeding due to its curved design.
- Threading Order: The 1034DX has a more intuitive threading sequence, going from right to left.
- Thread Guides: The 1034DX improves upon the 1034D’s design, preventing frequent thread tangling.
- Machine Body Thread Guide: With the 1034DX, thread knots don’t get stuck, making the threading process smoother.
- Looper Threading: The two models have slight variances in their threading process.
- Knife Release: Both models have distinct methods to release the knife, with no clear winner.
- Presser Foot Pressure: The 1034DX provides clearer pressure markings for better stitch quality adjustments.
- Tool Storage: The 1034DX offers a more organized and intuitive tool storage solution.
