Design Details & Measurements for the Doll Face Mask
I’ve incorporated two adorable pleats in the front to resemble the surgical masks we often see in hospitals. Not only does it look authentic, but it also fits snugly on the doll’s face, covering the nose and chin efficiently.
The mask is modeled on an 18″ Our Generation doll, which is pretty much the same size as an American Girl doll. Since there’s a slight size difference among some 18″ dolls, ensure the mask fits well before finalizing it with the bias tape. Our mask’s finished dimension is around 4 3/4″ x 1 3/4″, but thanks to the pleats, it can adjust a bit to fit various doll face sizes.
Unfortunately, my Sienna doesn’t have the ears to support an elastic face mask, hence I’ve opted for a tie-behind design. If your doll’s got more prominent ears, elastic might be a suitable choice! And a heads-up, I’ve made this mask single-layered for fabric efficiency, but feel free to double up if you’re using a thinner fabric.
Materials Checklist
- Sewing machine (or hand stitching tools). I personally use my Brother SE1900.
- Woven fabric piece, sized 5 3/4″ x 2 3/4”, pre-washed and ironed. (Need fabric tips? Check my guide on doll clothing fabric!)
- Two 28″ strips of 1/4″ double-fold bias tape (I’ve got more on this below.)
- An iron and its board
- Wonder clips or pins
- Essential sewing equipment like scissors and such
About Bias Tape & DIY Options
While you can always buy pre-folded bias tape, creating your own from leftover fabric is a breeze! I craft my bias tape using a bias tape maker I sourced from Amazon. To make your own 1/4″ double-fold bias tape, begin with a fabric strip about 1″ wide. Use the 1/2″ bias tape maker to produce 1/2″ single-fold tape. Fold it once more, and voila, you’ve got 1/4″ double-fold bias tape!
Step-by-Step: Crafting the Doll Face Mask
1. Start with your fabric and create two small pleats. Measure 3/4″ from a side, fold down (wrong sides together), and press. Then fold back up to leave a 1/4″ pleat. Don’t forget to press these pleats for a crisp finish!
2. For the second pleat, fold the fabric right sides together midway and press. Then fold back up leaving a 1/4″ pleat, pressing once more.
3. Fold each fabric side in by 1/4″ and press. Fold again by 1/4″, encasing the raw edges. Press and clip in place using Wonder Clips.
4. Using your sewing machine, stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge, ensuring your pleats are aligned.
5. Time for the bias tape! Align the midpoints of the mask and the bias tape. Encase the fabric’s top edge with the bias tape and clip/pin. Stitch near the bias tape’s opening from one end to the other, ensuring it’s neat and straight.
6. Repeat the above step for the other side of the mask.
7. If necessary, press one last time. And that’s it! Your doll’s face mask is ready to shine.
