Embroidery Language: Decoded
Embroidery, like any craft, comes with its own set of jargon. But once you get a grip on these terms, you’ll navigate through your projects with much more ease.
Embroidery Materials and Tools ️
- Stabilizer
- The support layer placed behind the fabric you’re embroidering. It ensures your stitches remain in place and the fabric doesn’t bunch up.
- Topping
- A layer, often water or heat-soluble, placed on top of fabrics with a texture (like towels) to prevent stitches from getting buried in the fabric.
- Blanks
- Any item you wish to embroider, ranging from fabric to clothing items.
- Spray Adhesive
- Used to temporarily bond the fabric and stabilizer during embroidery.
- Embroidery Scissors
- Sharp and precise scissors for intricate cutting needs, such as trimming threads or cutting appliqué fabric.
Embroidery Techniques and Processes
- Marking
- Using tools to indicate the exact spot an embroidery design should be placed.
- Hooping
- The act of securely placing your fabric and stabilizer within the embroidery machine’s hoop.
- Floating
- A method where only the stabilizer is hooped, and the item to be embroidered is attached outside the hoop.
