Kickstart the Holiday Spirit with Themed Pillowcases!
There’s something incredibly magical about the holiday season for my little ones. In order to boost their holiday spirit, I’ve crafted some unique holiday pillowcases for them over the years.
The tradition is straightforward: As the festive season approaches, I introduce these themed pillowcases onto their beds. While they might not necessarily match their bedsheet sets, my kids absolutely adore them. It adds to their excitement and anticipation for the upcoming festivities!
The best part? Even if you’re a beginner in sewing, crafting a pillowcase is a breeze. There’s minimal cutting, and the sewing is basic. You only need to get fancy if you wish to include additional decorations like french seams.
Luna’s Holiday Pillowcase Collection
I’ve made pillowcases themed around various holidays and special moments. Here’s my list:
- Valentine’s Day
- St. Patrick’s Day
- Easter
- Last day of school (Hello, summer! ☀️)
- Fourth of July
- First day of school
- Halloween/Fall
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
I chose not to include their birthdays, given their close proximity to Christmas. However, you can always customize based on your family traditions or other global celebrations. The only thing you’d need is the right themed fabric or perhaps some embroidery or cutting machine for designing.
Crafting the Perfect Seasonal Pillowcase
The majority of my fabric choices are basic woven cotton, sourced from popular stores like Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, or JOANN. When sewing, I keep it simple. I typically use my serger, which means just a few seams and it’s all set.
If you don’t own a serger, fret not! There’s a plethora of easy-to-follow tutorials and patterns available online for crafting pillowcases.
I generally stick to one fabric type for my pillowcases. It simplifies the process, and I don’t always have matching fabrics on hand. Online shopping for fabrics can sometimes be a bit hit-or-miss with color coordination.
Fabric Tips
Non-directional fabric? Grab about 1 to 1 1/4 yards. However, if the fabric has a particular direction and you’d like it to align a specific way, aim for at least 1 1/4 yards. I’ve sometimes cut corners with just one yard, only to later find it wasn’t cut properly. If your pillowcases are larger than standard sizes, adjust the fabric quantity accordingly.
