Hey there! It’s Luna here. ✨ Back in my high school days, I was deeply engrossed in music, being a top-notch cellist and part of a local symphony till the end of my doctoral studies. But, you know, mastering an instrument comes with its challenges.
My intense practice sessions left me with minor injuries and even a diagnosis of a connective tissue disorder. Sadly, this meant I had to ease up on playing, and now I deal with thumb, fingers, and wrist issues. And trust me, when it comes to sewing, these ailments do affect.
I faced troubles using typical sewing tools, including rotary cutters. But, the game changed when I stumbled upon the Martelli rotary cutter. I thought, why not give it a shot? So, I did, and now I’m here to spill the beans on my experience with this cutter.
Martelli Rotary Cutter – All the Details
Martelli offers three standard sizes: 28mm, 45mm, and 60mm. I opted for the 60mm, which pairs amazingly with their 24″ strip ruler. And, if you’re into quilting, their fussy cut templates are worth exploring! While the 28mm was intriguing, it felt bulky, and the blade’s visibility was a tad less than the 60mm. Plus, with my range of fabric cutters, making curved cuts isn’t an issue.
Compatible Mats
Some years back, I bought Olfa rotary cutting mats which fit my table just right. Despite the Martelli brand having its own mat, I can vouch that their cutter works smoothly with non-Martelli mats. Bonus: It’s gentler on my Olfa mat than my previous Fiskars 60mm cutter. Yay!
✋ How to Grip the Martelli Cutter
It’s a bit different than what you might be used to. Ideally, you hold the cutter with your main hand and wrap your middle, ring, and pinky fingers around its handle. Your thumb and forefinger rest opposite the blade. Due to my thumb issue, my grip varies slightly but remains effective.
What I Loved
Kudos to Martelli for being inclusive – they have a version for left-handed sewists! The ergonomic design is a boon. I can cut fabric with minimal cramps, and the weight distribution allows me to even sit and cut. Plus, the blade cover’s auto-slide is a neat safety touch. However, occasionally, it slides only halfway, which is a minor inconvenience.
The Downside
No product is perfect, right? Firstly, this rotary cutter is on the pricier side. The blade replacement isn’t cheap either. Though the blade promises 3-5x longevity, the reason remains a mystery. Blade replacement can be a tad tricky, and the unscrewing mechanism had me puzzled. I do have longevity concerns about the cutter’s spring. Lastly, some color variety in handle shades would’ve been the cherry on top. A splash of red isn’t my room’s theme, but aesthetics do matter to me.
