How to Sew a Blind Hem With a Blind Stitch Presser Foot

Mastering the Art of the Invisible Hem

Master Blind Hems: Perfect Stitches with a Blind Foot Guide

Hey there, it’s Luna! Sewing can truly be magical, and one of the spells I often cast is the invisible hem, commonly known as the blind hem. This technique is a must-know for those keen on creating apparel or spicing up their living spaces with handmade drapes.

The reason? Well, a blind hem offers a sleek, professional finish, perfect for trousers, formal wear, skirts, and even those luxurious drapes in your home. And the best part? With the blind hem stitch, any minor imperfections become nearly invisible, making it a fabulous choice for those still mastering the straight stitch on their machines.

Though some prefer hand-stitching, I’ve always leaned towards machine-sewing using a blind hem presser foot – it’s quicker and demands less manual dexterity.

Beginner’s Guide to Invisible Hemming on a Machine

Most modern sewing machines, like my Brother machine, come equipped with a blind hem stitch. Based on the fabric you’re working with, you’d use stitch 2-01 for non-stretchy fabrics or stitch 2-02 for stretchy ones. Sergers can handle stretch blind hems on knit garments quite well, too.

If your machine doesn’t have a dedicated blind stitch, worry not! You can craft the standard invisible stitch with a sequence of straight stitches followed by a wide zigzag stitch. For a stretchy version, simply swap the straight stitches with narrow zigzags.

Even though the interior may appear intricate, only tiny areas where the thread nicks the fabric will be visible externally. Wondering how a Blind Hem Presser Foot looks? Machine brands have their designs, but most resemble the two types I have from my Brother and Singer machines. Each one has its methodology, which I’ll share in a bit.

Is a Special Foot Essential?

Strictly speaking, no. You can craft a blind hem stitch using a regular zigzag foot. But, having the dedicated foot acts as a perfect guide, ensuring your stitches are on point!

Creating the Perfect Blind Hem: Step-By-Step

  1. Prepping Raw Fabric Edges: Untreated edges of fabric tend to fray. To prevent this, you can:
    • Fold the fabric to shield the raw edge during hemming.
    • Apply zigzag stitches along the edge.
    • Utilize an overcasting or serger stitch.
    • Employ interfacing or Fray Check (though not my top pick).
  2. Marking the Hem Line: Decide the desired length of your hem. Fold the fabric, pressing a sharp crease, and mark 1/4″ from the edge. Basting stitches (either by hand or machine) can make the next steps easier, especially for newbies.
  3. Setting Up the Blind Hem Fold: With right sides together, fold your fabric along the basting line, securing it in place.
  4. Sewing the Invisible Hem: Equip your machine with the blind hem presser foot, ensuring thread matches or is slightly darker than the fabric. Carefully stitch, keeping straight stitches aligned with the hem fold. Adjust width to ensure zigzags just grasp the fabric.
  5. Unfolding the Hem: After sewing, iron the fabric to unveil the invisible exterior.
  6. Basting Stitch Removal: If you used basting, now’s the time to remove it and admire your handiwork!

Undoing a Blind Hem Stitch

Mistakes happen! If you need to redo, use a seam ripper to remove the zigzag stitches, then separate the fabric layers.

Another Option: Hem Tape

Feeling overwhelmed? There’s a simpler alternative: hem tape. Just stick it inside the hem, press, and you’re done! It’s featured in my no-sew doll skirt tutorial.
